Do You Need Personal Nursing Liability Insurance? 

There are some professions where liability insurance is simply a must. Many of these are in companies that provide consultation or services, most notably the medical profession. Because in every industry things go wrong, and in medicine this can have lasting physical and emotional implications, those in the medical profession need to be prepared for the possibility of lawsuits being filed against them.

Doctors are not the only ones who need this type of malpractice insurance. Nursing liability insurance covers the actions of nurses involved in their practice. It is necessary because nurses have so much contact with patients in a wide range of capacities.

Nurses are usually covered under their employers insurance. This means that if the nurse is the party responsible when something goes wrong at work, the insurance will most likely cover her. However, this type of insurance does not cover everything and nurses should understand what exactly their employers insurance will handle and what it won’t.

In most cases it is a good idea for nurses to have their own nursing liability insurance. There are so many things that employer’s insurance may not cover that it is important to protect yourself as well as you can, and having your own policy is one of the best ways you can do this.

Some of the reasons for carrying your won nursing liability insurance are to cover you if there is a conflict of interest between yourself and your employer. In this situation you will definitely want someone to represent your interests.

There are some things your employer’s insurance will not cover. Your personal policy can cover those holes in the policy and can also protect you if your employer should ever file a claim against you for negligence. It can also cover you in the even your nurse’s license should be questioned due to reports of alcohol or drug use or other inappropriate behaviors.

Some nurses are not covered at all, because they don’t have an employer. A self-employed nurse or volunteer nurse falls into this category and should definitely have a personal nursing liability insurance policy.

If you decide to take out a policy for yourself, you need to determine how much coverage is right for you. You definitely want to have a good amount of coverage so you won’t find yourself having to pay anything out of pocket, but if you have too high a limit you may be at higher risk for litigation.

There are a few ways to get a better deal on your nursing liability insurance. Of course the first is to have a clean record and keep it clean. The second is to take a risk management course. Discounts are given to student nurses or those who have just graduated. Retirees who still carry a valid license also qualify for a discount.
